One call at a time: The impact of the MGFA Helpline

When you live with myasthenia gravis—or love someone who does—there are moments when the weight of the disease feels especially heavy. Patients and caregivers can feel isolated, overwhelmed, or simply in need of someone who understands.

Recognizing the emotional and practical challenges that accompany an MG diagnosis, the MGFA launched the MGFA Helpline in 2024. Created with the support of generous partners, the Helpline is designed to address an unmet need in the MG community: emotional support.

While medical care is essential, patients and caregivers also need a place to talk through fears, frustrations, and questions. Every call to the Helpline is answered by a trained counselor who provides compassionate support and guides callers to trusted educational and community resources.

The need for the Helpline is clear. In 2025, counselors answered 643 calls, each representing a moment when someone needed answers or support.

The majority of callers seek emotional support and help coping with the daily realities of MG. These conversations often center on managing uncertainty, processing a new diagnosis, or simply having a safe space to be heard.

Other callers need help navigating resources and care. From understanding treatment transitions to finding support services, callers lean on Helpline counselors to help make sense of a complicated healthcare system.

In less than two years, this resource has already become an indispensable part of the MGFA’s approach to patient support and education. Thanks to investment from donors and partners, the MGFA is meeting the emotional and practical needs of the MG community, one call at a time.
