Living with MG Stories

Volunteer Spotlight: Trouble Nkhowani

Meet Trouble Nkhowani, who lives in Lusaka, Zambia, and proudly holds the title of our first MG Friend across the ocean. Trouble works tirelessly to ensure the MG community in his country receives the support they need. This is no small feat for a man balancing his own MG diagnosis, a full-time job, and his roles as a husband and father.

In Zambia, support for individuals with MG is limited. Most resources are found only within the healthcare system, with very few local support groups, online communities, or specialized services available. Like many developing countries, Zambia faces challenges in accessing specialized healthcare, affordable medications, and timely diagnosis. The cost of treatment can be a heavy burden for individuals and families.

Despite these challenges, Trouble goes above and beyond. If you ever visit Zambia, you might find him driving from house to house delivering support, speaking with MG Friends across Africa by phone, or joining the Volunteer Voices call, even though it’s 1:00 AM his time.

When asked about his journey, Trouble shared:

“I found the MGFA online while searching for more information about myasthenia gravis.

What inspired me to volunteer was the belief that I can help make the world free from MG. I know I can make a difference with the skills, time, and knowledge I have. Volunteering helps me as much as it helps others—it shows me that despite my limitations, I still have so much to give. With my education and skills, I can help MGFA achieve its goals. My biggest hope is that one day, every person with MG can receive diagnosis and optimal treatment on time.”

Trouble’s dedication is a powerful reminder that the MG community is truly global and that compassion, commitment, and hope can travel any distance.
