Thao’s MG Story: Why I Walk for a World Without MG

I was healthy until May 2024, when I developed sudden-onset right-sided ptosis. I was diagnosed with ocular MG and then generalized in October of that same year. Through my diagnostic work-up, I was found to have refractory seronegative MG. I have been treated with many different therapies and developed complications from severe immunosuppression.

Prior to my diagnosis, I was very active and regularly participated in obstacle course races and mini-sprint triathlons. I managed a demanding practice in health care for 20 years. I never imagined that I would have to retire early from my career and stop participating in sports I enjoyed because of MG.

Despite being closely connected to my care team and supported by my family and friends, I experienced a profound sense of loss after my diagnosis – the loss of the life I once knew and the loss of my professional identity. Because of these feelings of isolation, I searched for support groups and joined several communities. Through these groups, I learned about the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America.

My passion has always been caring for others, and living with MG has only deepened that commitment. As I searched for purpose within my own journey, I found myself drawn to the MG community, attending and volunteering at MGFA events across California.

Each connection reminded me how powerful it is when people come together in understanding and support. That’s why I wanted to help organize a Northern California MG Walk – to bring people together in hope, healing, and shared purpose.

Planning this walk has been deeply rewarding. I feel proud to transform something so challenging into something meaningful to help raise funds, promote awareness, and unite the MG community.

I hope you and your family will join us. Build your own local MG community or support your loved ones. Join an MG Walk where you live, or create your own through the Virtual MG Walk program. And if you live in Northern California… see you in Sacramento on June 6!
